Autumn 2011 Haiku Contest WINNer Announced!

Congratulations to Stephen Winn for "WINNing" the Igneous Rock Gallery Autumn 2011 Haiku Contest!  Here is Stephen’s haiku.

falling colors drift
columns of color stand straight
water wets the leaves

Since I know some of the entrants I recused myself and deferred to my cousin, Jim Turner, to judge the submissions. Following is part of Jim's explantation of his decision...

"The tone of Stephen's haiku is consistently developed, unified and unifying. (Not that tone can't change - if done right.) It also has a wonderful melodic cadence. Lines 2 & 3 speak of the rock and fountain, while 2 may also allude to colorful trees. I also like the clear physical directionalities in the poem which immediately transport me into its dimensions - leaves drifting (sideways, circling?) but countered by the straight columns - I can easily imagine them landing in the fountain and the water blending their colors against that of the rock.... a nice resolution of the two movements/directions of the first 2 lines."
