First Quarterly Haiku Contest!

For some time now we have tossed around the idea of writing a Haiku that perfectly captures the essence of our products -- which brings us to the subject of ...

The Spring 2010 Igneous Rock Gallery Haiku Contest!

What exactly is haiku, you may ask?  Haiku (pronounced, HI-coo) is a form of Japanese poetry - ancient, yet still very much alive today - much like igneous rock!

Traditionally written in a single vertical line of seventeen syllables, haiku is commonly written in western languages in three lines of
five, seven and five syllables.

Here is an example, translated from the original Japanese:

petal by petal
yellow mountain roses fall
sound of rapids

Matsuo Basho (1644~1694)

Here's the Contest:

Write the best haiku of the season and you will win a beautiful grouping of three Okanagan Highland andesite candle holders similar to the ones pictured.  Staggered in elevations of 12", 8" and 4", these groupings typically sell for $250.

Contest Rules:

1)  Your haiku should follow the basic tenants of haiku composition.

A proper haiku has certain elements.  You can scratch the surface of what there is to know about haiku here.  http://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Haiku-Poem

Remember the seasonal reference for the contest! This reference need not be overt, as in naming the season, for instance.  It can be subtle and suggestive, as in the example above.

The contest is quarterly, so your haiku's seasonal reference should apply to the appropriate season.

2)  Your haiku should capture the essence of our products.

There is a lot of good, raw material to work with here.  The rocks are 45 million years old.  Our products have a natural and wilderness theme. They often have an Oriental feel, which lends itself to haiku.

Natural forces, lava, fire and water are good fodder, and yet, our products are also very restorative.  Their timeless beauty evokes thoughts and feelings of peace, relaxation, well-being and bliss... also good fodder for haiku.

3)  Your haiku must be original.

Your haiku is your intellectual property, however, by entering the contest your consent for us to publish it on our website is implied.

Winners to be announced as follows:

Spring - June 1st.
Summer - September 1st
Autumn - December 1st
Winter - March 1st

The deadline for submission is one week before the above listed dates.  We may choose to publish some of the entries on our blog in advance of the judging.

Please submit your entries to:  robert@igneousrockgallery.com

Have Fun!
