2010 Summer Haiku Winner Announced

Robert's cousin Jim, here.

Thanks for all the submissions to the Summer Haiku Contest. Summer proves to be a very busy season indeed, with many memorable outdoor activities along the way. Your haiku entries creatively portrayed the integral, rich aesthetic palette that Igneous Rock Gallery water features contribute to the enjoyment of this season, and the downright beauty, peace and joy they provide! Once again it's our pleasure (and challenge) to choose from a wide and interesting assortment.

The majority also met the contest criteria of proper haiku structure, including references to both the current season and to our products. It is from those entries our winner was chosen and we are delighted to present.

The Summer 2010 Igneous Rock Gallery Haiku Contest Winner:

Fire-born rock now rests
Serene under water's flow;
Refuge from the heat

Randy Reardon

Congratulations, Randy!

Technically superb and poetically captivating, we found Randy's haiku striking on many different levels -- with a fully developed dynamic marvelously present at each level and line.

First, there is the stunning and unmistakable geologic life cycle of igneous rock -- each line dynamic, distinct, gorgeous -- splashed with its own palette of colors and sound, temperature and time.

There's also a seamless rhythm of syllables and words, of imagery and meaning. An onomatopoeia of cadence, if you will, from line to line. The rough, mono-syllabic staccato of fiery, tumultuous creation -- and yet now in the stillness of rest... all in Line 1! The calming of eons peacefully traced in Line 2's languid and measured cadence... And resolution comes once again, as if a sigh of relief, in Line 3's juxtaposition of the relaxed 'refuge' against the staccato of 'from the heat'. The rhythm indeed has its own language.

Finally, we were struck by its natural symbolic relevance. Modern life has its pressured and strenuous moments, requiring refuge, rest, reflection and revitalization, does it not? Will the toils of our labor reap, with perseverance and time, their due reward? How about the reward of learning (or surviving!) some of life's harder lessons, gaining through the process deeper peace, richer colors, greater strength?

Then again, it's also just plain beautiful rock with peaceful, gurgling water playing over it, in the cool shade on a lazy summer's day....

Thanks for your submissions, and keep 'em coming! Next up - the Autumn Contest - with entries due by December 1st.

Enjoy!
